On 11th of April every year Sindhi community celebrate DAL PAKWAN Day.

This dish is much popular in Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujrat where the percentage of sindhi community is more compared to other states. This recipe is a combination of chana dal and crisp deep-fried puri made of maida or fried flatbread known as pakwan.

Channa Dal is topped with imli (Tamarind) chutney and green chutney made of fresh coriander and mint leaves, and chopped onions. The combination of these two chutneys and onions is like icing on the cake.

Dal Pakwan Recipe is one the most lovable sindhi breakfast. Pakwan is tasty and delicious snack which is served with dal topped with green chutney and onion.

Ingredients  

  • 1 Cup Chana dal
  • 1/4 Tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1/4 Tsp Garam masala powder
  • 1/4 Tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 Tsp Jeera (Cumin seed)
  • Tamarind pulp
  • Salt to taste
  • Few coriander leaves - for garnishing dal
  • 1 small sized finely chopped onion

Ingredients for Making Pakwan

  • 1 Cup Maida (all purpose flour)
  • 1/4 Tsp Black pepper
  • 1/4 Tsp Jeera (Cumin seeds)
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions 

  • Boil dal with two cups of water, salt and turmeric powder for 25 mins untill cooked properly

For Tadka (Tempering)

  • Heat oil in a pan,add cumin seeds,let it crackle,then add red chilli powder,garam masala powder and green chillies. Cook for few seconds and pour over the cooked dal. Dal is ready.

Method For Making Pakwan

  • Take maida in a bowl add cumin seeds, black pepper, salt, oil and mix properly
  • Then knead a stiff dough with little water.
  • Let it rest for 15 min.
  • Make small round balls from the dough. Roll them in small disc or circles with rolling pin.
  • Prick with fork, to avoid pakwan from puffing.
  • Fry the pakwan in hot oil on low flame untill it turns crisp and golden.
  • Once fried serve the pakwans with the dal.
