What is Modak?
The term “modak” finds its origins in the Sanskrit language, where “mod” means happiness. Hence, modak is not just a culinary delight but a symbol of joy and contentment.
When offered to Lord Ganesha, it is believed to please him, bringing blessings of happiness and fulfillment to the devotee.
Mawa Modak is considered Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweet. The unique shape of the Modak, resembling a dumpling or a divine offering, signifies the sweet rewards of dedication and devotion.

There are different varieties of modak that are prepared and offered to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Utsav. Some of the most popular varieties of modak are as follows.
Different types of modak:
- Ukadiche Modak: Ukadiche Modak is a steamed version of this delicacy. The outer covering is made from rice flour dough, while the inner filling can vary from grated coconut and jaggery to sweetened lentils. It is garnished with ghee and cardamom, offering a delightful blend of textures and flavors.
- Fried Modak: In contrast, the Fried Modak is immersed in hot oil until it turns golden brown. This method imparts a crispy texture to the outer shell, while the inner core remains soft and very tasty. It is usually filled with a mixture of grated coconut, jaggery, and aromatic spices.
- Chocolate Modak: As the world evolves, so does the modak. The Chocolate Modak is a modern twist on this traditional treat. It combines the rich flavors of cocoa with the classic modak shape, creating a delightful fusion of tradition and innovation.

Ingredients
- 100 Grams Milk Powder
- 50 Grams Powdered Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- 3 Tbsp Fresh cream
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 Tsp Elachi powder
Instructions
- Heat the pan on medium flame, add butter and let it melt.
- Once melted add fresh cream and mix well.
- Add milk and stir it well on medium flame till the milk mixture starts to boil.
- Now add milk powder.
- keep stirring constantly until the mixture becomes thick.
- Add elachi powder and mix it well.
- Mawa is ready, turn off the flame and let it cool
- Once it is cooled add powdered sugar and mix it well.
- You can increase or decrease sugar quantity as per taste.
- Mawa is now ready - remove it in a bowl
To make Modak - use mould -
- Take little mawa in your hand and bind it.
- Put it on one side of the mould.
- Similarly, put little mawa on the other side.
- Press and close the mould and remove the excess mawa from it.
- Open the mould and take out the modak from the mould - Modak is now shaped as required.
- Keep it aside in a plate - In a similar way make all the modak.
